Self Care. A mindfulness choice to actively participate in self-care activities to help establish and maintain a wellness lifestyle. 

Let’s break down what it means.

What is Self-Care?

The concept of self-care embodies taking steps to protect your own health, including physical, mental and emotional well-being. This is a time in where we pay attention to ourselves and listen to what our body is saying and taking action.

Self-care is highly important because it focuses on the relationship you have within your own self. It helps with mood stability, confidence, increases self-love and it reduces feelings of anxiety/depression. All to create a wellness lifestyle.

Self-care means identifying things we like doing without the guilty feeling associated with it, setting limitations with others in order to prioritize our “me-time” and being able to feel re-energized.

Self-care starts with oneself. We need to make the effort to set time apart for ourselves. It is highly important that this stays consistent as much as possible. This will essentially enable us to set boundaries while at the same time aid us to care for other things and people when it is needed without having any negative feelings.

Self-care creates a space to promote self-awareness and acknowledgement of your needs. It is a lovely thing to be able to have a wonderful relationship within yourself. It establishes self- connection, strength, and nurturance which really is the foundation of personal relationships and builds on a healthy support system.  

Self-care is a space that allows our mind and body to take a moment to connect. Our emotions and thoughts are allowed to be freely felt without judgement. Self-care puts our priorities into perspective. This allows us to also discover that our time and energy is a precious thing and we can evaluate who is deserving of our space

Self-care has helped me realized that my energy and happiness lies within myself and I definitely enjoy prioritizing this time in my everyday wellness life.

8 Ways to Self Care.

  • Setting boundaries. Identify your triggers and understand your limitations. It is definitely okay to set boundaries with others. It is apart of our wellness lifestyle. Someone shared with me that saying “no” is a complete sentence. Mind Body Green has a great article on how to set up boundaries. 
  • Eight hours of uninterrupted sleep.
  • Healthy eating and regular exercise. Highly important not only physically but mentally. Eating well increases our sense of accomplishment. Create a healthy lifestyle surrounding food and exercise.
  • Indulging in hobbies. What do you enjoy to do for fun?
  • Social Connectedness. A night out with your friends fuels the soul just right.
  • Daily structure routine. A consistent routine helps the mind not to feel overwhelm or stress, make sure your to-do list is well intended and feels just right.
  • Take a “time-out” either during work or after work. This can be a great time to meditate. I have written an article based on Meditation and Mindfulness Exercises. It can help you get started practicing mindfulness.
  • Religious or Spiritual guidance.   

If self-care is a new concept, I highly encourage you to challenge yourself. It can difficult prioritizing our “me-time” but the long-term wellness lifestyle reward is worth it. Take only 10 minutes of your day to engage in something mindfulness. In this way, you can build up your sense of comfort.
