zacatecas-mexico-catedral

Zacatecas is northwest of Mexico City. It is part of my home state. I have frequented Zacatecas, Mexico several times throughout my childhood years.  My mom is from a very small town located in Zacatecas. Since I was little, I was expose to my Mexican roots. We would drive for 2 days to reach our little town called Mesillas, next to a city town called Sombrerete. It was quite the long journey.

Zacatecas, Mexico was always a destination every October. The town was filled with many celebrations and festivities. Now that I am older, I appreciate much more the time, the culture and the ambiance. It had been sixteen years since I last visited.

La Quemada Archaeological

La Quemada archaeological site displays a monumental settlement for its architectural design. There is a location where the great hall of Columns with a square, which is a large court for a ball game in the shape of an “I.”  Another pyramidal base displaying Votive pyramid. The site is just kept to nicely and historically dated to its time.

It is located in a high-altitude location, is an old mine with an underground train that takes you to the rock formations. There is a tour and your tour guide reviews the different rock formations, discusses the mine workers and its conditions, and how they lived and built it. There is a rock/crystal display miniature museum, looks like a rock museum inside the mine. It is just all so captivating. There is a waterfall and you can see the antiquated mining machinery.

Bufa Hill

Once the Mina El Eden tour is over, you can take the teleferico tramp to the Bufa Hill or refere to as the Cerro de la Bufa. The view along the way is amazing. You can see the whole city. There are also shopping stands right outside and the ability to take pictures.

The Bufa Hill is significant as the arrival of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla took place and the Mexican War of Independence. Visit the chapel built in 1728. La Plaza de la Revolucion Mexicana and the Observatory display wonderfully a panoramic view of the town of Zacatecas. There are also wonderful statues of Pancho Villa and other historical figures.
